Interview with Dr. Larry Dossey at: http://www.emergingworlds.com/pro_interviews_detail.cfm?Content=196
"I used to
believe that we must choose between science and reason on one hand, and
spirituality on the other, in how we lead our lives. Now I consider this a
false choice. We can recover the sense of sacredness, not just in science, but
in perhaps every area of life."
LARRY
DOSSEY, M.D.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Dr. Larry Dossey is a physician of internal medicine, formerly with the
Dallas Diagnostic Association, and is former Chief of Staff of Medical City
Dallas Hospital. He has become an internationally influential advocate of the
role of the mind in health and the role of spirituality in healthcare.
After graduating with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin, he
received his M. D. degree from Southwestern Medical School (Dallas) in 1967.
Following internship he served as a battalion surgeon in Vietnam, later
completing his residency in internal medicine at the Veterans Administration
Hospital and Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
Dossey is past president of The Isthmus Institute of Dallas, an organization
dedicated to exploring the possible convergences of science and religious
thought.
Dossey has lectured all over the world, including major medical schools and
hospitals in the United States --Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, the
Universities of Pennsylvania, California, Washington, Texas, Florida,
Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic. In 1988 he delivered the annual Mahatma Gandhi
Memorial Lecture in New Delhi, India, the only physician ever invited to do so.
Dossey has published numerous articles and is the author of eight books,
including SPACE, TIME & MEDICINE (1982) and BEYOND ILLNESS
(1984), which have been translated into several languages, and which examine
the role of the human mind in health and illness. His book, RECOVERING THE
SOUL: A SCIENTIFIC AND SPIRITUAL SEARCH (1989), explores the nature of
human consciousness and the possibility of a Universal Mind. MEANING &
MEDICINE (1991), shows that the meaning that we
perceive in ordinary life-events can make the difference in life or death, and
can set the stage for miraculous healings. His landmark book on prayer, HEALING
WORDS, became a New York Times best-seller. Dr. Dossey has continued to
explore the role of prayer in health in PRAYER IS GOOD MEDICINE (1996)
and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR...YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT (1997). His
most recent book, REINVENTING MEDICINE (1999), explores the role of
nonlocal or infinite mind in health and medicine. A collection of Dossey's
essays, HEALING BEYOND THE BODY, will be published in 2001.
The primary quality of all of Dr. Dossey's work is scientific legitimacy, with
an insistent focus on "what the data show." As a result, his
colleagues in medical schools and hospitals all over the country trust him,
honor his message, and continually invite him to share his insights with them.
Dr. Dossey's goal in all his books is to anchor the so-called holistic health
movement in a model that is scientifically respectable and which, at the same
time, answers to man's inner spiritual needs.
Dr. Dossey is the former co-chairman of the Panel on Mind/Body Interventions,
Office of Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health. He is also the
executive editor of the peer-reviewed journal ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES IN
HEALTH AND MEDICINE.
Dr. Dossey lives in Santa Fe with his wife Barbara, who is a
nurse-consultant and the author of several award-winning books.
